If you are familiar with, are using or are just starting a Pay Per Click advertising campaign then you have probably
read a little about landing pages. Landing pages are pages on your website written around a specific topic, keyword
or should I say both. The main purpose of landing pages are to keep a visitor interested in your product or services
once they enter your site. In pay per click advertising the importance of a landing page is equal to choosing the
correct keywords to bid on, and the ad that is listed under those keywords.
In this example we are going to say we are a electronic company. Our services include all of those as your larger
electronic company like Circuit City offers. We are trying to sell our nationwide service warranty on all HDTV sets
whether you bought it at our shop or not. The keywords we chose are tv repair warranty, tv service warranty, televisions
for sale with warranty etc...
Without a landing page created when someone clicks on our ad they will be directed to our main website page. On this
page there is information about all our products, that means a customer who was looking for something specific within
the search engines now has to search our site for the information they were looking for. 99% of the time it will not
happen, and a potential customer is lost to a back button click.
So how do we change this? How do we make the search engines work for us? The answer is simple. Landing pages.
In the above example there was no landing page, but imagine if there was. If our business had a landing page that only
had information about televisons and tv service warranties we would have captured the visitors interest. There was no
guarantee they would have made a purchase, but if they like what they read we at least got a bookmark and a chance of
a return visit when they are ready to buy. That beats a back button click all day long.
Landing Pages should be looked at as making it easier for a potential customer to make a buying
decision. How many times have you searched for something online clicked on the first link or two and found exactly
what you weren't looking for, more searching? It happens more times then not, and that is what having landing pages
can avoid. Make it simple for the potential customer, and they are more likely to make a purchase from you. Make it
difficult on a customer and they will probably assume if your website is so difficult, what happens if I have a problem…..
Back button click!
That is where Google found a niche and took a large portion of the
search engine traffic share and profits. They realized with all of the information online today they needed to make
it easier for people searching so when they search for tv service warranties they don't get bombarded with tv sales
companies. Now granted it is technology created by humans so it will never be perfect, but it will be simplified.
